Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of February 22, 1874

Overview

She writes to the king and sends family photographs, a gesture that keeps political and personal loyalties closely intertwined. Meanwhile Wagner finally settles into his score, and the evening turns intellectual as they read Nietzsche and find his opening too abstract to satisfy them.

Content

Sunday, February 22:

I write to the King and send him photographs of ourselves and the children. R. gets down at last to his score. In the morning he reads a book by a headmaster in Danzig about Gallicisms in the German language, which pleases him. In the evening we read Nietzsche’s recently arrived book on the uses of history; it starts off in a very abstract way and consequently seems somewhat arbitrary.
