Tuesday, February 4:
Herr Schott seems interested in R.'s proposal. Yesterday R. sent off his letter to the King. I have not read it. Went to the photographer's with the children in their costumes for the King. Returned home late, which vexes R.; he is in a state of torment just now, wondering whether the date can be adhered to if the King now gives the guarantee, and he is worried about the turmoil which will result.
A gloomy evening in consequence. My sick eyes condemn me to idleness, and I am becoming more and more turned in on myself. At times I feel that I shall never be able to speak again.
