Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of February 2, 1874

Overview

The day moves between practical household changes and a sense that the larger project may be turning a corner: a letter to the King is being prepared, and a new servant family arrives from Berlin. In the evening, the mood softens into intellectual pleasure as the old Gibbon is taken up again with genuine delight.

Content

Sunday, February 2:

R. writes to the King, discussing in his letter the vocation of the German princes. Councilor D. wrote to me that the winds blowing from Hohenschwangau seem more favorable now to our enterprise than previously. In the afternoon our new servants arrive, a man, his wife, and three children, from Berlin.

In the evening we pick up our old Gibbon again after a long break, with great enjoyment (Honorius, death of Stilicho, etc.).
