Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of December 3, 1873

Overview

While the diarist continues shopping for wallpaper and handling letters, R. keeps working. The evening reading of Luther leads into a meditation on faith, invisible support, and the difference between spiritual dependence and outward institutional props. R.’s conflict is framed as a choice between being a monk-martyr or an organizer-reformer, and his anger over indifference is especially praised.

Still on my expeditions, selected wallpapers, and wrote all kinds of letters besides. R. works.

In the evening, since pillars of Heaven, which one cannot see though Heaven remains standing, and thus faith likewise requires no external pillars. R. understands his dilemma as being the question he had to ask himself, whether he would rather be a monk and a martyr than an organizer and reformer. His exhortations to Melanchthon, who is sure of himself but timid in relation to the cause, and his rage over the word indifferent—very fine! It is fine, too, that he was not in Augsburg when the Confession was proclaimed.
