Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of December 2, 1873

Overview

The diarist makes cold but cheerful Christmas errands and later walks with R. under a clear sky. They laugh over the French and their supposed sentimental behavior during Bazaine’s trial. In the evening they return once more to Luther in Coburg, finding the reading deeply uplifting.

Tuesday, December 2:

On my Christmas expeditions, very cold, but a clear sky. R. works; I go for a walk with him in the afternoon. We have to laugh a great deal once more about the French, who, at the mention of the flags in the Bazaine trial, all start weeping (except for Bazaine!).

In the evening took up Tannhäuser again in Coburg; as always, great delight and exaltation.
