Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of November 21, 1873

Overview

November 21 is taken up with domestic worries, telegrams, and a long lunch with Malwida. Conversation turns to the children and the painful doubt that they will not embrace the writer’s moral or spiritual ideals. The evening passes quietly with the children and more reading of Koppen.

Content

Friday, November 21:

Various domestic cares, and two telegrams as well, here attached, discovered. Malwida came to lunch; talked a great deal with her about the children. Will my desire for one of them to devote herself unselfishly to her father be realized? I doubt it. They will not believe my teachings, will make their own mistakes, and not seek the bliss of bearing the cross rapturously on their shoulders, will not choose that. How sad it makes me to know that my experience can spare them nothing!

Spent the evening with the children; later read Koppen at Malwida’s home.
