Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of November 5, 1873

Overview

A day of springlike weather brought a pleasant walk with the children and a lively outing to a puppet theater, which left a strong impression, especially in the Franconian dialect. The bright moonlight on the way home deepened the sense of contentment with the town and family life. At lunch, R. recounted a dream about Schnorr that mingled admiration, loss, and impossibility, and the evening ended with renewed enjoyment of Tuther.

Wednesday, November 5:

Real spring weather. Walk with the children in the garden. Many domestic cares. In the afternoon to a Kasperl theater with the children, very gripping and interesting. As we left, a splendid moon was shining brightly, a lovely impression of town life, a pleasure to be in this little town. The Franconian dialect of the puppet play gave me much enjoyment; it imparts so much life.

At lunch R. told us about a melancholy dream: he saw Schnorr again, singing in an opera by Gluck, yet all the time he knew that Schnorr had died; and in his astonishment and wonder at the impossibility of it all, he woke up. “How fine you are!” he had told him. “You are like Apollo!”

In the evening Tuther, to our great edification and enjoyment. This is German.
