Overview

On October 21, cold weather and hail add to the house's annoyances, keeping the domestic atmosphere unsettled. Senator Petersen and his daughter arrive, bringing pleasant memories of Hamburg and giving the diarist a favorable impression of the senator's character. Their conversation also touches on encouraging political and cultural signs in South Germany and Austria.

Content

Tuesday, October 21:

Hailstorms and cold, house inspection, still full of annoyances.

In the afternoon, arrival of Senator Petersen and daughter, pleasant memories of Hamburg, the Senator an outstanding person, very individual, in character he reminds me a little of Sulzer, however different in appearance.

He observed some encouraging signs in South Germany: the German Emperor’s preacher (Frommel) listened to in Gastein by the whole Catholic population and much respected. A peasant in Lower Austria said, “If only we had a minister of culture like Falk!” etc.
