Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of October 20, 1873

Overview

On October 20, domestic life becomes difficult when the new manservant must be dismissed, and Wagner does not grasp that servants there do not grow attached to him. The diarist walks with the children and tries to imagine a hat despite the ugly fashions around her. The evening is again marked by music, as she and Wagner play a Haydn duet together.

Content

Monday, October 20:

Domestic upsets; the new manservant has to be dismissed. R. does not understand that servants here do not become attached to him. He works. I went for a walk with the children. Attempt to design a hat for myself from the dreadful fashions, which really seem to have been created just for disreputable women.

No reading in the evening, but a Haydn symphony in D played as a piano duet with R., great delight in it.
