Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of October 1, 1873

Overview

On October 1, R. returns to his score, which brings relief because it makes everything feel more manageable. The day also includes polite but limited responses from supporters, including thanks from the Grand Duke of Oldenburg and payment from Schott for Götterdämmerung, though the writer suspects this may be the last major income they receive. Growing expenses make the writer anxious, especially in contrast to R.'s strong confidence and their own mistrust of fate. The evening is spent reading more Uhland and an article on Loki, with speculation that Germany and Italy may still align.

Content

Wednesday, October 1:

R. goes back to his score—a great joy, for then things are easier to bear. Otherwise nothing of note. The Grand Duke of Oldenburg thanks us for sending the plans and brochures, but says nothing further. Schott pays for Götterdämmerung (10,000 francs) and is thus behaving agreeably. But this is probably our last large piece of income, and our growing expenses fill me with worry.

R. has an unquenchable confidence in himself, and I an all-absorbing mistrust in Fate. In the evening started on Uhland’s 6th volume, also read the article on Loki in Grimm’s Mythology. (Alliance between Germany and Italy after all.)
