Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of September 30, 1873

Overview

September 30 brings the departure of relatives, which leaves the writer deeply sad and newly aware of how much their circles have been influenced against R. and his undertaking. R. spends the day writing letters so he can return to work on the score, while the bust is packed away and the excellent Kietz leaves. A note from Munich reports that the Wagner Society there has sent another 1,500 florins. The financial support is welcome, but the emotional tone remains subdued.

Tuesday, September 30:

Departure of our relations, which leaves me in a mood of great melancholy; I see clearly that the way in which R. and his undertaking are spoken of in my sister-in-law’s circles has had an influence on her, and her heart is not big enough to follow him.

R. writes letters, clearing things up, so that from tomorrow on he can get to work on the score. My bust is packed away; departure of the excellent Kietz. From Munich Herr Baligand reports that the W. Society there is again sending 1,500 florins.
