Wednesday, June 30:
Hans does not write. At night I wake up and question myself. My realization of the dreadfulness of life keeps me in a state of anxiety about the children. I feel guilty ever since Hans told me that he could not do without me. This I did not believe! To keep from R. and the children all knowledge of my worries, that is my task.
Wrote to Claire and told her everything; in this connection I came to read an earlier letter of hers, in which she writes that people and even Ollivier, my brother-in-law, are talking about my situation. In the afternoon I was carried downstairs. R. has been working hard. In the evening a conversation about Schiller brings us on to Don Carlos, which we are reading.
