Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of August 25, 1873

Overview

The King’s birthday and their wedding day were marked with quiet celebration, flowers from Malwida, and a toast to the King. R.’s gift was the money he had sent to the church in Lucerne, which gave the occasion a restrained, intimate tone. In the afternoon the architect Briickwald visited to inspect the theater and reported everything in order. The day ended with the christening of the little summer house and a feeling of deep contentment with R.

Monday, August 25:

The King’s birthday and our wedding day, which we celebrate quietly, as always; R.’s present, as he says, is the little sum of money which he has sent to our dear church in Lucerne. Malwida brings us flowers; we drink to the King’s birthday, with all good wishes for him!

In the afternoon, in the garden, the architect Brückwald has come here from Leipzig to inspect the theater and finds everything in order. We christen the little summer house with an improvised supper. Lovely evening, blissful feeling of being at one with R.!
