Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of August 5, 1873

Overview

On August 5, the family hastily sets off with all the children and the nursemaid to accompany the father to Bamberg. The farewell there overwhelms the diarist with sadness, which in turn provokes one of R.’s familiar angry outbursts. Afterward they settle into the hotel and spend the afternoon visiting the cathedral and walking to Michaelsberg in fine weather.

Content

Tuesday, August 5:

The plan I thought up yesterday, to accompany my father as far as Bamberg with all the children, is cordially accepted by R. We hastily get ready, and at 11 o’clock, in great haste, all nine of us, the nursemaid included, depart.

In Bamberg we say goodbye to my father; I am overcome by a great melancholy, which vexes R., and he gives way to those passionate outbursts with which I am confronted after every reunion with my father.

When my father has gone, we go to the hotel Bamberger Hof; in the afternoon, we visit the cathedral and take a walk to the Michaelsberg in magnificent weather.
