Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of August 4, 1873

Overview

August 4 is dominated by practical work, especially sorting papers because of the father’s continuing suspicion about R.’s role in the Das Rheingold affair. The diarist also delivers proofs and hosts local friends for an evening gathering. The visit is pleasant and companionable, with her father’s playing providing the main distinction before an early bedtime.

Content

Monday, August 4:

I have to do a lot of sorting through papers, since my father is still of the strange opinion that, on the occasion of Das Rheingold, R. had tried to bring about Baron Perfall’s destruction!

I then deliver my proofs. Invited our local friends for the evening, a companionable gathering, distinguished by my father’s playing. At eleven o’clock to bed.
