Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of August 1, 1873

Overview

On August 1, the household makes small preparations for the roof-raising ceremony, including plans for the dean to compose a verse for the foreman. The diarist travels with her father and children to Fantaisie, where the dean is staying, and later listens to her father play his Berg Symphony. The day is marked by a pervasive melancholy, even as she notes the Grand Duke of Weimar’s ambitions for an academy and order of palms with her father’s assistance.

Content

Friday, August 1:

Little preparations for the roof-raising ceremony tomorrow. We want the dean to write the verse for the foreman. In this connection I drive with my father and the children to the Fantaisie, where the dean is spending the day.

In the evening my father plays us his Bergsymphonie. A melancholy mood throughout the whole day and among all around me.

The Grand Duke of Weimar wants to found an academy and establish an order of palms! He wants my father to help him with it!
