Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of July 26, 1873

Overview

The writer tried to prepare lodging for her father and went to Neumarkt to meet him, but he arrived later than expected, forcing her to return first. Klindworth suddenly appeared to collect Götterdämmerung for arranging, adding to the day's bustle. Her father finally came tired and worn out, and the evening was devoted to music. R.'s singing of a scene from Der Fliegende Holländer moved everyone deeply, especially because it seemed to reflect their own situation.

Saturday, July 26:

Ordered rooms in the Reichsadler for my father, and journeyed to Neumarkt to meet him there, but he did not arrive at the expected time, so I went back again. R. is awaiting me with the friend Klindworth, who has arrived suddenly and unexpectedly to fetch Götterdämmerung for arranging. At 3 o’clock my father arrived, very tired and worn out.

In the evening there was music, with Frau v. St[einitz]. R. sang the scene from Der fliegende Holländer, making a profound and moving impression. He himself was much affected at singing this particular scene, in which he sees our whole situation, before my father. After they had all gone, we remained for a long time under the influence of our emotions - never again will the Dutchman’s words sound quite like that.
