Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of July 14, 1873

Overview

Routine and labor continue, with the composer occupied by the score and by questions of German identity and antiquity. The entry mixes intellectual seriousness with amusement at political absurdity and concern for a publisher’s health. It suggests a household that is both industrious and reflective, with practical worries never far from cultural debate.

Content

Monday, July 14:

Regular days, busy with and for the children. R. occupied with the score and much with German antiquity, always in connection with the question, “What is German?” Much amusement over the French, who at the review held for the Shah of Persia raised a cheer for the cuirassiers of Reichsofen.

Discussing restrictions on the press, R. says that only for libel would he impose terrible medieval punishments, perhaps cutting off a hand, but he would permit all else. Continued reading Uhland. Concern for the publisher Fritzsch, who is said to be ill. The first good and honest businessman with whom R. has ever had to do must also be the one to arouse our anxiety for his life.
