Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of June 12, 1873

Overview

Illness, building expenses, and children’s needs dominate the day, though the diarist tries to keep her thoughts from remaining on worldly burdens. The doctor’s treatment of R. seems only to agitate him further, and money worries are persistent. Still, there is a compensating joy in music when they work through Rheingold in the evening.

Thursday, June 12:

R. is still working, though he is not well. The doctor insists on his drinking Ems mineral water, and this seems only to make him more excitable.

There are in any case too many worries: the estimate for the house grows ever larger, the children need more and more things, but our income does not increase. Luckily our thoughts are not always of this kind, and they fly heavenward.

With the children a lot; in the evening went through Rheingold, to great delight.
