Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of May 30, 1873

Overview

Farewells close the Weimar journey and turn the homeward route into a moment of relief and gratitude. The return is experienced not just as physical travel but as renewed attachment to Germany and its smaller towns. Home is reached peacefully, with the household asleep and well. The day ends in the comfort of being back where things feel settled.

Friday, May 30:

Numerous farewells! R. addresses fine words to my father as we leave, and I thank him from my very soul for having undertaken this journey, which he did purely for my sake.

Nice journey home. It seems shorter; the little Thuringian towns appeal to me strongly, and a deep and fervent love of Germany stirs within me—it is the only country in which one can live!

Arrival in Bayreuth at ten o’clock. Everybody asleep, but well; we are home again!
