Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of April 30, 1873

Overview

Illness and overindulgence interrupt work, and the day turns toward caution and restraint. Practical matters about a pamphlet, dedications, and correspondence occupy the foreground, while the weather remains unsettled. Still, there is a note of literary pleasure in finishing the second part of the novel and a glimmer of political aspiration in the proposed Bavarian visit.

Content

Wednesday, April 30:

R. did not have a good night; he thinks that the lavish supper at the Brockhauses’ disagreed with him, and he must above all make up his mind to avoid all such pleasures.

We talk about the pamphlet he is about to publish, and I ask R. to dedicate it to Frau V. Schleinitz; since an individual dedication would mean making several alterations in the pamphlet, R. drafts a fine letter, which he will have printed as a preface.

The five people in Hamburg thank us very prettily for the certificates of patronage sent to them. I write to my father, telling him of my resolve to meet all acts of malice with complete silence.

Very bad weather, though the birds are singing; the trees, however, have not yet got beyond “the first down on their chins,” as R. puts it. In the evening we finish the second part of Minen und Gegenminen, with much enjoyment.

R. writes proposing a visit to the King of Bavaria.
