Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of February 22, 1873

Overview

The final day is marked by more correspondence, musical reception, and the continuing strain of sleeplessness. Suggestions about performances and audiences show the ongoing entanglement of art with public politics and personal loyalty. The visit from the Ritters and late-night reading bring the entry to a measured, somewhat weary close.

Content

Saturday, February 22:

Boni had a better night, but not R. He receives news from Vienna, the Academic Society wants to arrange a concert for the World’s Fair. From Munich a man writes to say that he has been driven mad by R.’s music, and what should he do about it?! Marie Schl. writes that Hülsen is pleading difficulties with regard to Lohengrin, and she suggests putting it off until the fall, to which we agree.

Visit from the Ritters, who are returning to Würzburg from Chemnitz. R. reads aloud passages from his biography. Late to bed.
