Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of February 21, 1873

Overview

News arrives from several directions, mixing professional opportunity, artistic admiration, and practical difficulties. Some reports flatter R.'s music, while others indicate obstacles in staging work and suggest delays. Visiting friends and an evening of reading create a more social and reflective close to the day.

Friday, February 21:

R. still not sleeping well; and Boni looks wretched. I spend a large part of my morning beside the ice, since Loldi is determined to try to skate. Fidi pesters me to take him to the “new house,” which interests him very much.

Letters arrive, among other things a printed poem to R. by Herwegh, very silly. There is also an anonymous letter from Mannheim, saying that in the Italian opera Heckel was soundly boxed on the ears for some remarks he made about it, and all Mannheim is rejoicing. I tear the letter up without showing it to R. Nice news from Hamburg. In the evening we read the Panchatantra again; among other things “The Blue Jackal” particularly delights us.
