Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of January 10, 1873

Overview

The day is full of family errands, work on Berlin plans, and news that is mostly discouraging. Letters from England and news of Napoleon III’s death are met with little emotional response, suggesting a climate of exhaustion or detachment. Practical matters about travel and a Crystal Palace concert proceed in the background. The author also notes an uneasy social wish, comparing her respect for Moltke to something distant and nearly untouchable.

Content

Friday, January 10:

Went to see Loldi in school, little pleasure in it; fetched the children at various times. R. writes the introduction for his Berlin reading. Letter from my mother. R. has a letter from England which gives him little joy, like all news from outside at the moment. Proposal for a concert in the Crystal Palace with half of the proceeds going to the C.P. company! We learn with hardly any emotion of the death of Napoleon III at Chislehurst. In the evening revised our travel plans. We spoke about Moltke, and I tell R. I should find it embarrassing if Marie Schl. were to introduce him to us on the evening of the reading. My respect for him puts him on a plane as distant as the orbit of the planets.
