Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of December 21, 1872

Overview

R. and I wake with matching dreams, a reminder of how closely our minds run together in waking life as well as sleep. We decide to abandon Berlin and focus the exhausting concert work on Cologne, Hamburg, and Prague, while R. struggles through letters to the King and other allies. Though the day is shadowed by illness and financial uncertainty, I am relieved about Eva and end the day cheerful enough to read Schlegel with real pleasure.

Saturday, December 21:

R. and I both have the same dream of ravening animals which were threatening me; so often our thoughts are identical, in dreams as in real life; on our return journey we both thought at the same moment of the Odyssey.

We resolve to leave Berlin out and to concentrate the, unfortunately necessary, concert activity in Cologne, Hamburg, and Prague, assuming that R. can bear it. Today he writes to the King, a task which is becoming increasingly difficult, then to the people in Bremen and to Herr v. Normann, urgently pleading our cause.

The management committee here has decided after all to complete the contracts, relying on the miracles R. is to perform... May God be with us! R. is not well. In the evening we read Schlegel’s lectures with great interest. I am very cheerful all day, since my worry about Eva has definitely been lifted from me.
