Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of October 16, 1872

Overview

The day is marked by calm family conversation and shared routine, beginning with breakfast with her father and continuing into an afternoon drive to the building site. They inspect both the opera house and their own house, keeping the Bayreuth project visibly present in daily life. In the evening the mayor and Feustel join them, and her father plays passages from his Christus, sounding different in his own hands than anyone expected.

Wednesday, October 16:

My father went to church. Breakfast together at about eight o’clock, much congenial talk. In the afternoon, drive to the building site, inspection of the opera house and of our house. In the evening the mayor and Feustel; my father plays passages from his Christus, which certainly sounds different beneath his fingers.
