Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of May 25, 1869

Overview

A kind letter from the Schures cannot lift Cosima's melancholy while Richard remains unwell. She tells him plainly that her anxiety centers on the children and on whether his inability to economize will leave them unprovided for. Paper hangers, lessons with the children, an outing to inspect an old bureau, and Don Quixote make up the day's practical and literary frame.

Tuesday, May 25:

Very nice letter from the two Schurés. R. unwell and I feeling rather melancholy. The reason for it, as I also tell R., is my concern for the children and my fear that R., through his inability to economize, will be unable to provide for them.

I still have to keep an eye on the paper hangers, but manage nonetheless to work with the children. In the afternoon to town with R. to look at an old bureau. In the evening read Don Quixote.
