Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of September 4, 1872

Overview

Concern for her father continued into the next day, and she was moved to tears again when asked about his condition. The family made more visits in the heat, then enjoyed a lively and intimate evening at Baroness Meyendorff’s, where her father played Beethoven, Chopin, and his own music. Old memories surfaced through their conversation, while the household laughter provided a welcome counterweight to her melancholy.

Wednesday, September 4:

I send a note to my father asking whether he has had some rest. My melancholy regarding him remains with me to such an extent that, when Frau von Meyendorff returns my visit and asks me how I find him, I cannot help bursting into tears, which gives her a shock. Other visits are returned, then to the Erholung with my father and Dr. Gille in the burning heat. Very pleasant, merry and earnest atmosphere!

Afterward with my father to Frau Merian-Genast. Later our dear old Alwine Frommann, and in the evening at Baroness Meyendorff's house, where my father plays us the Andante from Beethoven's G major, the preludes of Chopin, and his own Mephisto-Walzer at my request. He talks a lot about old times, when together we bought fruit in the market in Berlin, and the old feelings of familiarity are recaptured.

In the margin: R. introduces as a standard aside, whenever a French word is used, As the Latinists say.

R. is in very good spirits, asks Dr. Gille whether he is any relation to the Spanish Gil with the green hose, which, since the unhappy man casts a fleeting glance at his nether garments, makes us all laugh very much, laughter which I in my naivete only increase by explaining to my father, "The Spanish play is a very decorous play, since it is a woman who was wearing the trousers."
