Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of August 27, 1872

Overview

Exhausted, R. asks her to go into town in his place, inspect the house plans, and make excuses at the architects' office, which she does. The household also entertains Briickwald at lunch, and they finally turn an awkward meal into a joke. Later they talk about the Crown Prince's humiliating journey through Bavaria and lament the miserable condition of teachers and clergy, while a reassuring letter from her mother says she is well.

Content

Tuesday, August 27:

R. is so worn out that he begs me to drive into town, to look at the plans, and make his excuses at the architects’ office; this I do, and at the same time visit our house. R. works.

Herr Brückwald at lunch, which is a bit difficult for us, but over which we finally joke.

In the evening talked about the journey of the Crown Prince through Bavaria, very humiliating for the King, but how to change that? Discussion over the wretched state of teachers and clergymen. A shame that it is so, need for a sweeping reform; but who is even thinking of it?

Letter from my mother, she seems to be quite well.
