Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of May 23, 1869

Overview

The Schures' visit disrupts the solitude Cosima needs, leaving Richard worn out and her thoughts elsewhere. Birthday letters arrive from Nohl, Lang, Nietzsche, Wickerle, and others, but many friends and relatives remain silent, which Cosima finds mean. By evening she feels melancholy and certain that solitude is all they require.

Content

Sunday, May 23:

Schuré day; all day long the Schurés, that is to say, disruption of my customary life. R. very worn out, I always with my thoughts elsewhere. I can no longer talk except with the children.

R. had letters of birthday greetings from Nohl, Lang, who reports that Marie Muchanoff completely denies that the Jewish pamphlet has had an effect in Berlin; from the philologist Nietzsche, a very nice letter; and from the postmaster Wickerle in Schwerin. All remaining friends and relations have kept silent. How mean!

In the evening I feel very melancholy. Solitude is all we need.
