Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of August 6, 1872

Overview

After a stormy night and little sleep, I felt poorly and uneasy about the thought of traveling again for the planned theater inspection in October. R. pressed on with his essay on actors but was already thinking of turning to a study of the German character, encouraged by his reading. The day was briefly interrupted by Richter's unexpected visit, and later by letters from Niemann and Mme Lucca, the latter urging us to come to Milan for Tannhäuser.

Tuesday, August 6:

Stormy night; got no sleep and am somewhat indisposed, through not having been out of doors for so long. Yesterday R. spoke about our journey of inspection of the theaters in October; I am worried over the thought of leaving the children, indeed, of setting foot at all in the outside world.

R. works on his essay on actors in order to complete the 9th volume, but declares that he would now much rather get down to his essay on the German character, spurred on by the books he has been reading.

In the afternoon surprised by Richter, who, however, can stay only two days. In the evening the young people and the Svendsens. Telegram from Niemann asking if he can come in the middle of August, for Siegmund!

Letter from Mme Lucca, saying that we must come to Milan for Lohengrin.
