Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of August 5, 1872

Overview

Loldi remained unwell, which weighed heavily on me while I worked through pages of R.'s biography and he continued his essay. The children visited the parson at Eckersdorf, and R. wandered off toward the Sophienberg and neighboring villages. Later he amused himself by reading Hebbel's Nibelungen aloud, finding it absurdly bad, and my mother sent the first volume of her history of the Netherlands.

Monday, August 5:

Loldi still indisposed; this worries me a lot. I correct some pages in R.’s biography while he works on his essay. In the afternoon the children go to the parson at Eckersdorf and I stay home with Loldi, while R. disappears in the direction of the Sophienberg, where he visits several villages.

In the evening he reads me the first act of Hebbel’s Nibelungen for fun, an incredibly bad piece of work.

My mother sends the first volume of her history of the Netherlands.
