Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of June 5, 1872

Overview

Rain keeps the day subdued, with Richard working on his biography and the writer occupied with the children and an ordinary walk. Her spirits sink because he is unwell, and the household feels hushed and anxious. A newspaper item about a new Parisian religious order aimed at the workers sparks conversation, and the day ends with a gift of Havana cigars from Herr Nettke.

Content

Wednesday, June 5:

Wet day. R. corrects his biography; I work with the children. Afternoon walk. Otherwise nothing of note, only that R. is not well, which makes me very despondent.

Our friends afternoon and evening. The newspaper has a report of a new “Knighthood of the Heart of Jesus,” founded in Paris to snare the workers. This provides a topic of conversation. Herr Nettke writes and sends some Havana cigars.
