Tuesday, June 4:
Fidi is blooming like a rose, and the other children are well; only Daniella is somewhat indisposed. In the park with the children, studied history and English.
On this occasion made unpleasant discoveries, such as that people have been coming up to my children and asking, “Whom do you like best, your first or your second papa?” and other things of that sort. Worries that Daniella in particular might not know what to do in such cases. Took strict measures. R. says, “This is a seat of government; it is not the Bayreuth people, but others transferred here from Munich.”
Drove to town in the afternoon, marked out our building site; R.’s plan is now ready. Visited Herr Kraussold, the consistorial councilor; touching simplicity of their living habits, his wife receives us in the vegetable garden. He talks excellently about the position of school and church. How helpless and powerless Protestantism is! It has to atone for the guilt of the Catholic church, and thus Catholicism is protected.
How false the relationship of the soil to the state is he demonstrates by telling us that the peasants regard the state as their enemy, not stopping to consider that they themselves are the state, since they have the vote, etc. The working people do not regard themselves as a part of the whole, but vote because this is the way things are, and they are certain that the Liberal deputy has no thoughts for them. The Catholic party deputy, however, who needs them in order to attain power, does concern himself with them.
Spent the evening with our friends. Letters from Herr v. Gersdorff; a philologist, Herr von Wilamowitz, hurls at us his polemic against Nietzsche’s book, under the title Zukunftsphilosophie. It is said to be contemptible. R.’s correction of the notice about Herr Weissheimer is printed in the A.A.Z. My tailoress in Milan has sent something for me to Beirut in Asia Minor.
