Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of May 27, 1872

Overview

R. is badly exhausted after a short night, but he still works out plans to keep his singers free from fixed contracts and to build a more flexible musical future. A walk in beautiful country and a visit with the Hummelbauer children lift the spirits for a while. The mood sours when a letter from Hans reproaches the speaker for taking the children on stage, leaving a painful impression. The day closes with a visit to Malwida Meysenbug, one of the few consoling social moments.

Monday, May 27:

R. slept only five hours and is very run down, but he works out his plan for keeping his singers free of firm engagements. He recommends Marie Lehmann to Milan; Wilhelmj is to set up a sort of school, and R. looks forward to the activities facing him.

In the afternoon went for a walk with R.; paths of great beauty. Saw the Hummelbauer, whose children sing us folk songs.

Back home, a nasty letter from Hans, reproaching me for having gone on the stage with the children. Bad impression. In the evening a visit to Malwida Meysenbug.
