Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of May 26, 1872

Overview

R. sleeps a little better, and reports from Betz and an American correspondent bring a measure of calm and international interest. Malwida joins them at lunch, and their walk through the Salamander valley gives a strong sense of being rooted in Germany. In the evening they read Rohde on Nietzsche, though the article seems too difficult and inward for ordinary readers. News that Bismarck is following the enterprise with national concern pleases them, while a letter from Vreneli reminds them that life at Tribschen remains quiet enough for foxes to steal chickens.

Content

Sunday, May 26:

R. slept somewhat better. Telegram from Betz; he is also appeased. Visit from an American newspaper correspondent who, already very well informed, is told by R. why the participation of America and England is important to him.

Malwida with us at lunch; went for a walk with her in the Salamander valley, a sense of being in the heart of Germany. In the evening read an article by Prof. Rohde on Nietzsche’s book; not suitable for the general public.

Frl. von M. tells us she has heard that Bismarck is very concerned for our undertaking and is following it with interest as a matter of national importance, which pleases us very much.

Letter from Vreneli; foxes are stealing the chickens at Tribschen, so quiet is it there!
