Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of May 17, 1872

Overview

R. had another miserable night and wrestled with how to deliver his speeches, finally deciding to write them out rather than improvise or perform like an actor. The day also included social calls, birthday shopping, and a visit to the festival site, which left a strong impression on the family. Despite the practical annoyances, there is growing satisfaction in the feeling of belonging to this new home.

Friday, May 17:

R. again had a wretched night! He is trying to concentrate on his speeches, "to memorize them like Beckmesser!" But then he decides to write the speech down and read it, since he does not wish to prepare himself like an actor, but is also unwilling to improvise, since the speech is to be preserved as a document.

I call on Frau von Lerchenfeld; the district president himself is out of town during these days! Purchases for the birthday. Feustel still magnificent, the mayor as well. In the afternoon visited the festival site with R. and the children, fine impression; our home here!
