Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of May 16, 1872

Overview

A very early start brought more domestic disorder, with workmen arriving before dawn and the landlords proving unreliable and muddled. Even so, the family enjoyed a cheerful outing, and the new rooms gradually came together with pictures hung and furniture in place. The setting is becoming increasingly pleasing, though worry persists over musicians who have withdrawn and the possibility of further interference with R.'s work.

Content

Thursday, May 16:

Paper-hangers at 5 in the morning, much work; our landlords muddled and unmethodical. But the children always lively and enjoying themselves. Family lunch, then with them to the Schweizerei.

The location here pleases us more and more, the close proximity is worth so much to R., that and the cultural atmosphere. Our rooms have now been furnished, pictures hung, etc., and R. is content. It is almost quieter and more peaceful than Tribschen!

Fidi overexcited in the evening, sings in bed until late.

The violinist Herr de Ahna has withdrawn, allegedly because of jury duty, but I suspect pressure from Joachim. What else lies in store for us? It is unthinkable that these gentlemen should not try everything in order to thwart our efforts. When will R. at last be left in peace to get on with his work?
