Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of May 13, 1872

Overview

Packing continued while R. dealt with the musicians and she visited the Albertina, where she saw outstanding works, including Raphael drawings linked to Durer. At parting, Countess Donhoff talked excitedly about Rubinstein's anger over Wagner and the way Wagner had captivated Vienna, especially its women. After warm farewells from their hosts, they left at five with Richter, but the night was sleepless.

Content

Monday, May 13:

Packing; R. busy with the musicians. I to the Albertina with Elisabeth Kr.; splendid things; Raphael drawings sent to Dürer.

Farewell from Countess D.; she talks about Rubinstein’s rage over Wagner: “Gounod has more talent; he must leave, there is no place for him in Vienna, where he is respected only as a pianist; W. has turned all heads, particularly those of the beautiful women.”

Affectionate parting from our excellent hosts and friends; at 5 o’clock departure with Richter. Sleepless night.
