Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of May 5, 1869

Overview

Loldi's renewed illness casts Richard's gray veil over Cosima's day. She works with the healthy girls, tends the sick child, and notes Loulou's first piano lesson with Marie Bassenheim. Letters from Mathilde and Claire bring practical news and reassurance that Cosima's mother is improving.

Wednesday, May 5:

Loldi ill! She caught cold again yesterday. In consequence, the gray veil, as R. calls it, overshadows my day. I work in the morning with the healthy girls and in the afternoon tend the sick one. Toward evening things get a little better.

Loulou today has her first piano lesson together with Marie Bassenheim. A letter from Mathilde; she has copied out mine to Herr Drumont. Yesterday a letter from Claire: my mother is improving.
