Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of March 30, 1872

Overview

She takes a spring walk with Professor Nietzsche while R. works, and later hears him play the scene between Waltraute and Brünnhilde. The previous evening they had revisited Fempler und Jiidin and marveled at the “drunken lack of culture” that can coexist with real talent. A fierce storm comes up in the afternoon, sending her to a fairy tale about the fisherman and his wife.

Saturday, March 30:

In the morning went out with Prof. Nietzsche in fine spring weather while R. worked. In the afternoon R. plays music, the scene between Waltraute and Brünnhilde. Yesterday evening we went through Der Templer und die Jüdin, in order to wonder at the “drunken lack of culture” - as R. puts it - of so undeniably talented a musician.

In the afternoon a great storm, and because of it read the fairy tale of the fisherman and his wife.
