Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of March 16, 1872

Overview

Herr Riedel from Leipzig wrote that he could provide more than 300 singers, which delighted us with the scale of support. R. was well again and announced, in his usual affectionate way, that he had secured an extension after discussing it with me. I spent much of the day writing letters while he worked, and Fidi had his first outing to Weggis. In the evening I returned from the dancing lesson and we ended quietly with Opera and Drama.

Content

Saturday, March 16:

Herr Riedel from Leipzig wants to supply more than 300 singers and says people are begging on their knees to take part. R. is well, thank God! As I am sitting with the children downstairs, he comes in and says, “I have succeeded in making an extension, my dear good wife. I have just been discussing it with you, for when something succeeds, I always discuss it with you; that is what I wanted to tell you.”

I wrote 4 letters (Riedel, Betz, Bachmann, Heim). R. works; at 2 o’clock, in fine weather, to Weggis, Fidi’s first excursion into the world! Back at 5 o’clock, I to the dancing lesson, R. indoors, where he edits his invitation. In the evening read Opera and Drama.
