Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of March 11, 1872

Overview

She spends much of the day writing letters to musical and literary acquaintances while R. works steadily, which she thanks God for. In the afternoon she visits the Stockers’ baby by boat, and R. sends off the score of Tannhäuser to be copied. Their evening reading of Schopenhauer leads to a remark about Schiller’s heroes speaking in proverbs.

Monday, March 11:

Wrote letters. R. works, thanks be to God! I write to Richter, Hellmesberger, Prof. Nietzsche, who tells me Hans will be giving his concert in Basel within the next three weeks. In the afternoon I go by boat to see the Stockers’ baby, whom the crossing had made ill. R. sends the score of Tannhäuser to Dr. Standhartner, to have the first scene copied. In the evening Schopenhauer’s critique of Kant.

While we were talking yesterday evening about the aphorisms of Schiller’s heroes, R. said that, like Sancho Panza, they speak in proverbs.
