Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of March 2, 1872

Overview

R. sleeps well after a late beer, but the practical chaos around the Ninth Symphony grows absurd, with wildly mismatched numbers of singers, demands for seats, and even a mayor offering to beat a drum. Despite the confusion, R. works steadily, and our nephew Fritz's arrival lifts the atmosphere. We end the day in a cozy and companionable mood.

Content

Saturday, March 2:

R. had a good night, which he says he owes to a late glass of beer. Letter from our good Feustel. Much confusion with the Ninth Symphony; instead of 200 singers Herr Stern allocates 38; then people from Schwerin want seats for the performance of the Nibelungen, and the mayor of Schweinfurt offers to beat a drum; on top of that, people asking R. to find them lodgings - much foolishness.

R. works. In the afternoon our nephew Fritz arrives, an always welcome guest. We spend a cozy evening conversing.
