Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of January 14, 1872

Overview

Sunday brought letters, sweets from Italy, and news that Wagner societies were spreading in Brussels, Cologne, and Vienna. R. handled bills and business worries, while I wrote letters and tried to keep the children cheerful and lively. That evening Schopenhauer and the thought of Bayreuth’s meaning weighed on my heart, but love remained the only real consolation.

Content

Sunday, January 14:

R. works, I write letters; some more Lohengrin sweets have arrived from Italy, and also sweetmeats from the Mendeses. The statutes of the Wagner Society in Brussels also arrive, and news that a similar society has been formed in Cologne. Marie Schleinitz writes to R., but nothing positive; it is to be hoped Cohn will soon tell us how things stand. Many bills vex R. He goes into town on business matters.

In the evening we take up Schopenhauer again. Explanation of the name Bayreuth, heim Keuth [“beside the clearing”]. Heaviness of heart; only love helps, to love through every moment!

The children are high-spirited and lively; they are all becoming quite pretty. Letter from Dr. Kafka; the Wagner Society in Vienna is very active.
