Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of January 8, 1872

Overview

Hans’s birthday is noted, though Wagner again has a poor night and the household remains under strain. Unexpected visitors from Bayreuth, banker Feustel and the mayor, bring welcome news and offer a better site for the theater, leading to a decision to move there in the summer. The day ends with the completion of Agamemnon, which Wagner praises not only for its grandeur but for its stone-like craftsmanship.

Monday, January 8:

Hans's birthday! R. unfortunately did not have a good night. From Bayreuth the banker Feustel and the mayor suddenly announce a visit. They actually come, spend the day with us, and please me very much. They offer another site for the theater, better than the one previously chosen, and we settle on moving there in the summer. Letters from Herr v. Loen and Councilor DiifHipp.

In the evening the completion of Agamemnon. When I tell R. that not only the tremendous naivete but also the tremendous mastery of it move me so much, R. says, 'Not just mastery, but craftsmanship - it is as if carved in stone.'
