Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of January 1, 1872

Overview

The year opens with a deeply moving surprise: garlanded children wake the narrator with a song and gifts, along with portraits that stir overwhelming gratitude and delight. That joy is quickly shadowed when Lulu falls ill with a fever, pulling the household into worry and care. Amid the domestic strain, there are also signs of intellectual life and support, including news for the Wagner societies and a kind letter from Alwine Frommann.

Content

Monday, January 1:

Children's voices wake me; they are singing 'All hail to the mother' and come garlanded to my bedside. I am very touched by the singing, the faces, and the goodness of R., who rehearsed them. I am made to go downstairs while things are being set up, then I am summoned. The garlanded children sing once more, bring me their gifts on cushions, and I see R.'s picture by Lenbach and a portrait of my father, also by Lenbach. Joy beyond words over the masterpieces and the whole presentation ceremony!

But immediately afterward I become aware that Lulu is unwell. I put her to bed; the doctor discovers that she has a high temperature. Sorrow and concern, 'the sad tune.' Arrival of the report to the Wagner Societies. Yesterday we read J. Grimm's speech on Schiller, which arrived for R., along with other very interesting things from Uhland's library. Letter from Alwine Frommann, very nice.
