Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of December 17, 1871

Overview

Cosima travels from Basel to Mannheim after coffee with the professors and steady reading of Schlegel. Wagner initially misses her on the platform, turning their reunion into affectionate joking about her standing there like a saga figure. He reports good news from Bayreuth, the King, and Feustel, and the evening introduces her to capable members of the Mannheim Wagner Society.

Content

Sunday, December 17:

Coffee with the two Basel professors at 3 o’clock; after steadfastly reading Schlegel’s lectures on history, arrived in Mannheim. Three gentlemen who were sitting in my compartment got out before me, so that R. did not see me; I waited on the platform, and at last he found me! Lengthy joking about this occurrence, R. says I was standing there like a saga, so earnest and long! — Good reports on everything; “I have managed my affairs well”; many good things about Feustel and all the Bayreuth people, good, too, of the King. In the evening visit the Wagner Society; excellent people (Heckel, Koch, Zeroni).
