The Brown Book

Diary Entry of December 31, 1868

Overview

Wagner enters a cradle song for New Year's Eve, with verses about a white sheep and a black sheep in the garden. The lullaby pairs a soothing opening with a teasing warning to a child who will not sleep.

New Year’s Eve

Schlaf, Kindchen, schlafe;
im Garten geh’n zwei Schafe:
ein schwarzes und ein weisses,
und wenn das Kind nicht schlafen will,
so kommt das schwarz’ und beisst es!

Sleep, baby, sleep;
in the garden are two sheep:
a black one and a white,
and if baby will not sleep,
the black will come and bite!
