The Brown Book

Diary Entry of March 12, 1868

Overview

A third sonnet extends Wagner's satire of Strauss and Lachner into a political fable. Dogs, cats, a lion, and a bulldog turn the artistic controversy into a mock struggle over kingship.

III.
Noch ein Sonett? Auf zweie noch das Dritte?
O David!
Was hülfe uns die zart bescheid’ne Bitte?

III.
One sonnet more? The third to cap the two?
O David, who’s to measure how sublimely
you have buried deep sense in a verse,
has Lachner’s latest suite imbued it too?
For if into our midst we will recall
the Master, if we will have him back,
and cry for that like seven crows by Schwind,
of what avail the humble soft entreaty?
You’ve hit it well: for even Lion the King,
is of the genus of the wicked cats,
and led the joker, Fox himself, astray.
The Royal coat of ermine and of sable
tear from the Lion’s claws now, dogs:
and choose the bulldog for your King!
